Welcome:
About Me:
My name is Kevin O'Rourke and this is my E-Portfolio. I'm an ISE Major at Stony Brook University with a specialization in Business. I am a pretty well rounded person and have several interests.
Writing:
First and foremost I love writing short stories and small novels. I like to write anything that tells a rich story with very real and surreal characters. My stories are featured at another one of my websites http://hawkeye99.wordpress.com/
I started writing seriously in high school and was published in our literary magazine. I like writing more as a hobby but would love to make a career out of it. The wordpress website where I posted my older short stories acts as an archive now. Since 2010 I've been writing at http://gengame.net/author/kevinorourke
Filming/Editing:
Another thing that developed from high school was my love for making videos. I was always designated as the ‘English project guy’ and made videos with my friends of the books that we were assigned. I’ve always been the main lead of these projects and feel satisfied knowing that I could make a classroom of 30 or so students and the teacher get a good laugh at different interpretations of classic plays and novels. Over the years I’ve greatly honed my skills and learned some new video editing software’s. I started with Windows Movie Maker then upgraded to Pinnacle Studios 12, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas 9.0. My projects are featured on my Youtube page at http://www.youtube.com/hawkeye9901
Multimedia:
Along with videos and writing I also enjoy drawing and digital art. I draw pictures often and always have since I was younger but in the past few years I’ve realized that I could scan these drawings and edit them on the Internet. I created a username and my page at http://hawkeye99.deviantart.com/ I use JASC Paint Shop Pro 8 to edit my drawings and have used Animation Shop Pro 3 to make animations. Currently I use Photoshop CS6.
Gaming:
I am a writer at http://www.gengame.net which is a website that does video game reviews and live “Let’s Play” events where the entire gengame cast plays marathons for charities like the Accelerated Cure Project. It’s great to play video games for a greater cause so I love doing the gaming marathons that are streamed online on the gengame.net live tab. I like to play games like Halo, Call of Duty, and the classics like Super Mario World, Donkey Kong, and Darius Twin. For my job as a writer at gengame.net I like to keep updated on gaming news so I tend to be the person that everyone goes to about release dates, gameplay videos, and reviews of upcoming games and newly released games. In turn, gaming is important to me because it inspires my art, writing and photo/drawing editing.
Charity:
In the summer of 2013 I participated in the Zelda Dungeon 2013 charity gaming marathon. We played every Legend of Zelda game and raised over $9000 for the Child's Play charity which provides games for children in hospitals. The marathon spanned a week and took place in Amory Mississippi. Raising this money alongside other members of the Zelda Dungeon staff created some great memories that I will never forget. Every year since 2008 I've walked in the Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis walk at the Holtsville Zoo and Ecology Center. It's great to raise money for a good cause that doesn't have as much awareness as it should. Also in 2013 I walked in the Making Strides Breast Cancer walk at Jones Beach. I walked alongside my family in memory of my Aunt Mary who sadly left us in 2011 to breat cancer.
Sports: If it has a ball, Frisbee, or some kind of objective/goal I'll play it at least once. I love games and sports like Tennis, Baseball, and Soccer. I've been playing sports since a young age and love being part of a team on and off the field/court.
Fish: My love for fish stemmed from my friends in my senior year of high school. Since we were able to drive, my friends and I would take daily trips down to Petco and look at the fish that they were selling and would spend hours (yes hours) looking from one tank to the next at all of the fish that they had in stock. In the beginning we all looked at the littlest section in the fish area where most people would overlook...Betta fish were all we could afford because they were cheap, you could put them in a bowl and they didn't need an expensive filter to live. Ever since then we have upgraded to 29-gallon tanks with several other fish.
There are tons of more things that I love to do on a daily basis but these few interests are a good core of what makes me a unique and interesting person.

You've got a model showcase website started, Kevin. You're making Stony Brook history and I hope you keep it up. I like your reflections on gaming. Check out Jane McGonigal's TED video, Gaming can make a better world. I wrote a paper on her viewpoint.

I've really enjoyed the video game articles and it makes me think back to how I write articles. Writing articles has helped me write my essays and vice-versa.

Hey Kevin, you've done a great job on your e-portfolio so far! Just wondering: with your extensive gaming background, and background as a gaming writer, what did you think about the articles on gaming and gamers that we've read this semester, so far?
