A crowdsourced rescue app for stranded marine animals.

Background:

The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation is a non profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation, and release of seals, sea turtles, whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Since the start of the program in 1996, over 4,000 marine mammals and sea turtles have been rescued off the beaches and shores of New York State. Many of these species have been severely depleted and even in danger of being extinct. Trained volunteers and staff provide assistance and care for over 150 animals a year.

Objective:

Our objective is to create a mobile rescue app dedicated to reporting stranded marine animals. The application will enable people to take a photo of any animal they believe is in need of help. It will send the photo, along with GPS coordinates and an optional text description to a database where staff can view all the reports and react accordingly.  Included in the app will be general information about the foundation, a reference guide to help users identify the animal, and contact information.
