My name is Tino (short for Agustin) Artiles Kuhnel and I'm 23 years old. I'm an exchange student from Spain, and I'm going to be here for the Spring 2014 semester only.

I live in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in Gran Canaria, one of the Canary Islands. I guess they're not that well known in the US, but they're one of the favourite holiday spots for people all over Europe, because we have one of the best climates in the world.

My major is industrial engineering and I'm in my last year, which for my degree in Spain is the fifth year.

I first started my studies at the Munich University of Technology, in the city of Munich, Germany. I had been for 8 years in a german school and highschool, so I figured I would seize the opportunity and study my degree in the top country for engineering in Europe.

However, after a year I had to return to Spain because of some personal issues and decided to continue my degree in my hometown.

Last year (2012-2013) I took another exchange scholarship to Opole, Poland, where I stayed for an entire academic year and got to know a new culture as well as amazing people and places.

I love sports. At the moment I'm just practicing Padel, a sport that is not yet known in the US, since it's only played in Argentina, Spain, Italy, Germany and some other countries in South America. This is how it looks like:

However I have practiced many sports throughout my life, even getting in to some teams, such as swimming, mountain biking, waterpolo and a martial art originated in Thailand called Muay Thai.

One of my other passions is travelling. I love seeing new places and getting to know new cultures. As yet, I have been to most of the European countries (Spain, France, Andorra, UK, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia...) and to the Dominican Republic and of course NYC. I'm looking forward to getting to know some more of the US while I'm here.

Technology

As I wrote before, my major is industrial engineering. Just like all would-be engineers I'm really interested in all kinds of technology. I think technology has been and continues to be a leap forward in human life, making our life easier day by day.

Lots of peoples nowadays, when spoken about technology, think about the latest tablet or smartphone in the market but according to one of the meanings of technology in the dictionary, technology is the application of practical sciences to industry or commerce.

Knowing that, technology can take many aspects, like a car, some new door mechanism or even a new chemical compound that will be useful for some purpose.

Our society as such wouldn't actually exist if it wasn't for technology. We have grown so accustomed to all our commodities that going back would be almost impossible and not without a big deal pain. Most of the products that we consume and use on a daily basis are based on technology: from the machines for the packing procedure of any kind of food to our clothes and transportation means.

I myself am really interested in particularly two areas of technology: the car industry and the energy industry. Both these industries are very thrilling areas right now, because they're both amidst a changing process.

The car industry is beginning to turn to other energy alternatives other than petrol. Hybrid cars are becoming more and more efficient, while the basis for hydrogen cars is already founded.

The energy industry is facing radically new ideas, too. With more and more money being invested every year in renewable energies, this sector is bound to continue to grow even more quickly in the future.

My whole life I've been asking how things work and disassembling everything that didn't work any more to see its interiors. Now I'm almost a graduated engineer, I feel like it's a particularly exciting time to be one, and look forward to actively contributing to any industry.
