Technology.

Technology is commonly defined as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. It has certainly lived up to its name. However what is technology? It doesn't have to mean computers or smart phones, but it can also include fire, the use of tools, weapons, etc. Technology has progressed tremendously since the beginning of man. When the early humans discovered fire and agriculture, that was a godsend for us. Eventually the Sumerians, who lived in Mesopotamia, modern day Iraq and Iran, developed cuneiform, an early form of writing that was developed to communicate and record ideas. This set the precedent for the later languages we have like Latin and Greek. The development of paper and gunpowder by the Chinese dramatically changed the world. Warfare was changed, with the development of guns and cannons and ideas could be easily recorded and transported rather than writing on heavy clay tablets. Electronic technology started with the invention of the light bulb, and began to change into the modern devices we have today. From the light bulb, came to cameras, then to televisions and eventually computers to small mobile phones.

Why do I mention all these technologies that humans developed? It's because they have played a huge part of our lives. We simply can't live without technology, especially computers and cell phones. Today, I feel that people have grown too attached to technology. It may have made our lives easier, but it has gave us a distraction. If you look around you, you will probably see someone on their laptop or smart phone, playing a game, using social media or texting a friend. The result of electronic technology has reduced our upfront personal interactions and replaced it with digital messages. Some people don't even like to call anymore, but rather text. So, even though technology has changed our lives dramatically, we should control our use of it so that we don't lose our connections with each other. Technology will still advance at break necking speeds and it will be hard for us to catch up. We don't know what in store for the future, but who knows how life will be in 10 or so years?
