Reflection for Lecture 7 Part II

In this lecture, we continue to talk about offshore drilling and the history behind drilling. Professor Halada showed us a few of the earliest models of these drilling tools. We then talked about the difference between offshore drilling and drilling on land. The difference between average barrels of oil production is quite astonishing, sometimes doubling or trippling the amount found on land. However, offshore drilling comes with its fair share of risks and concerns. Catastrophic events such as a blow out or extreme weather could mean the destruction of the platform and also the local ecology as oil spills can have detrimental effects to the local wildlife. We also discussed the importance of understanding the various byproducts and their potential hazards to the environment.
