Training for Laboratories on Campus

ELS 002: Lab Safety - Chemical Hazards (Online)

ENV 001: Hazardous Waste (Online)

ELS 024: Nitric Acid Safety and Security (Online)

ELS 003: Lab Safety - Biologial Hazards (Live)

I have taken some safety classes before in order to be in other labs at Stony Brook and the process is quite easy and straight forward for those that are online. You have to complete a series of modules and usually each has a quiz that you must pass with at least 80% correct. Most of the training is straight forward and derived from common sense and it is easy to pass the online ones since you are able to look at the informational slides while you are taking the test. Biological Hazards was an actual live presentation in the Life Sciences building for an hour and half  but without any quiz. It was much more boring but I also think that I retained the information more. I don't necessarily work with biohazards through my project but there is still tissue work and cell cultures that take place in this lab and I am also working with blood, urine, and feces.

Basic Lab Animal Techniques Live Training Course

This extensive training just to get excess to see the animal testing facilities was surprising to me and I actually learned a lot about different government agencies, policies, and laws about animal experimentation. I have registered for an Occupational Medicine account, I am just not approved yet, but being approved will mean I am on the protocol which is exciting. Each time I go to the office I learn more about the security and I am impressed, like the keypad that you enter the issued security code but the numbers display in a different place each time. If I get the security code before June 21st then I can take the class where I will actually learn how to handle the animals interactively but I am not sure if I want to be up to that level.
