The State University of New York at Stony Brook was founded in 1957 and was originally known as the State University Long Island Center. At the time, only 148 undergraduates and 14 faculty members were enrolled at the University. Fast-forward 50 years and today Stony Brook University has grown to an enrollment total of 23,000 students and is considered the "flagship" university of the SUNY system. Currently, Stony Brook offers more than sixty majors to undergraduate students through the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the School of Health, Technology, and Management, the School of Journalism, the School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, the School of Nursing, the School of Social Welfare, the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, and the School of Professional Development.

The University is also affiliated with Brookhaven National Labs and is Suffolk County’s only tertiary hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center, and the only academic medical center in Suffolk County.
