Stony Brook University was founded in 1957. Today, it is a public research institution that enrolls approximately 25,000  students and is considered one of the flagship institutions of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Stony Brook has three campuses--one in Manhattan, one at the eastern end of Long Island in Southampton, and the main campus on the north shore of Long Island, approximately sixty miles from Manhattan.

 

Some other notable information and rankings for Stony Brook University includes:

 

 

    1. Stony Brook University is ranked in the top 100 public national universities by U.S. News & World Report and is included on their list of notable programs for undergraduate research/creative projects
    2. The Wall Street Journal ranked Stony Brook University 8th for sending undergraduates onto elite graduate schools.
    3. The Princeton Review includes Stony Brook University in lists such as 'America's Best Value College', 'Best Northeastern Colleges', and 'Diverse Student Population'.
    4. In 2001, Stony Brook become one of 62 institutions invited to join the Association of American Universities (an organization compiled of the top research universities).
    5. Stony Brook University is ranked in the top 1 percent of all universities in the world by the London Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
    6. Stony Brook is one of ten universities given a National Science Foundation recognition award for integrating research and education.
    7. Stony Brook co-manages the Brookhaven National Laboratory under contract under the U.S. Department of Energy.
    8. Stony Brook's mascot, the Seawolf, is a mythical creature that reportedly gives seven years of good luck to those lucky enough to see it. However, as almost any student in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (SoMas) will gleefully tell you, it's also a rather extraordinarily ugly fish.
