Geotagging Definition:

Geotagging is the process of adding a particular location to different types of media (photographs, videos, SMS texts). The description of the location can include, but are not limited to addresses, altitude, place names and longitude and latitude coordinates.

For example, geotagging a photo means that a particular location is assigned to the image. So on a program like Google Earth, the picture will be located at the specified coordinates.

Geotagging Examples:

Pictures can be shared online with geotags through websites such as Flickr (), Picasa (), Tag Galaxy (taggalaxy.de) Nikon myPicturetown (), PhanPhare (), SmugMug (), Google Earth, and Google Maps ().maps.google.comwww.smugmug.com...www.phanfare.commypicturetown.com...picasa.google.com=en&utm_source=en-ha-na-us-bk&utm_medium=ha&utm_term=picasawww.flickr.com...

Geotagging Benefits:

You can share pictures of places you have gone to with other people. If one is interested in travel, geotagging photos can show one what France looks like or what Italy looks like. Geotagging can also be beneficial when one is trying to find a place to go to because one can look at different photos before going to wherever that way they will know what to expect

Geotagging Dangers
Without trying to do so, Facebook users (for example), can reveal their exact location and/or destination to thieves, stalkers, and other strangers. iPhone users can unknowingly tell these strangers the same private information. Geotaggings separates our privacy from our personal lives. It 'codes' the information we upload to the Internet, and with this code, nearly anyone--friend or foe--can uncover things we hoped were private. With one photograph uploaded, a thief can decipher what brand of car we own, where that car is located at a given moment, and at what time we will be away from said car. Geotagging can literally lead to preying on innocent people.

Geotagging in the Future - Emerging Technologies

What does the future hold for geotagging? Will the rapid growth of technology make geotagging more popular?  There are lots of new technologies coming make geotagging more likely to come about.  There are faster processors, and the devolpment of new ways to store and transfer data. New devices will easily be able to handle excess data. There is intel designing thunderbolt technology the speed at which data can be transfer will be with in seconds for a extreme large files such as HD movies. Speed such as this can make applications which can automaticly geotag for you.  If  Emotiv becomes more popular geotagging can help send infromation directly to your brain based on images you see.  It is very likely to become popular depending on what society is demanding.

Personal Reflection:

I found this assignment to be fairly easy and enjoyable. My group worked well together and we didn't have any problems dividing up the work. I didn't know alot about geotagging before this assignment, and hadn't spent a great deal of time on websites like Flickr.  Overall, the completing assigment was a positive experience.
