Coastal Oceanography : MAR 333

From Stony Brook University's Undergraduate Bulletin

MAR 333 covers "aspects of physical, biological, chemical, and geological processes that characterize coastal marine environments. Topics include such natural phenomena as upwelling, particle transport, benthic/pelagic coupling, and barrier island processes, as well as the impacts of society on the Coastal Ocean."
The class fulfills Marine Science degree requirements (MAR elective credits) and is also classified as a DEC H (Implications of Science and Technology).

Class Description

I attended class twice a week with approximately 20-30 other students. The final grade encompasses two midterms (30% each), homework and attendance (10%) and a final exam (30%). There are also two mandatory field trips to Stony Brook Harbor and Flax Pond. The exams are a combination of multiple choice and short answer.

Goals for MAR 333

I'm really excited about this class. It covers some material that I'm a little familiar with from growing up on the Olympic Peninsula and taking MAR 104 last year as well as case studies from local areas such as Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn and lobster mortality in Long Island Sound.
