I'm taking ESG 201 mainly because they switched the requirements for my major around last year which moved this class from recommended to required and I'm trying the squeeze it in before I graduate, which unfortunately means I have to go late to my engineering design II lab.

In taking this course I hope to learn to be able to understand why things fail in order to prevent them in the future.  Though failures are good because they help us understand mistakes, I don't want any project I am working on in my future career to fail.

When you think about it, doctors have their patients lives in their hands.  Doctors, however, deal with one patient at a time.  In engineering, there could be thousands or hundreds of thousands of people who could be affected by the failure of a structure at any given moment in time, and I want to make sure that I take all the steps possible to prevent that.
