Lecture five was interesting to listen to because of the way that it was able to connect to other areas of study. Failure is inevitable and is caused by several different factors. This includes, human nature and complexity. Failure as a result of human nature can be caused by psychological issues and organizational issues. This is seen by being overconfident and biased based on available information. Not only is this seen in engineering but also in business settings. When it comes to making decisions, it is important to consider the potential biases that were present when making the decision. Complexity is also an important factor in the causes of failure. Complexity is not only seen in design but in everyday life. For example, issues regarding complexity can be found in the human brain and the stock market. The many variables that are found in complex systems leave a great deal of room for failure. It is essential to understand that things do not happen in a linear fashion and the prevention of failure is not guaranteed.
