Psychology

Knowingly or unknowingly, a person's psychology plays a major role in putting him at the level of risk he is. Being confident that something works just because the opposite has never happened is one of the major examples of such a case. Until a person has had their first major/minor accident on road, they think of themselves to be better than everybody else around them and tend to take the safety and security features more lightly than they should. Overlooking basic rules, being over confident of something simply because it has never happened before is something that comes naturally to all humans.

Role of Media

The media, be it the television, newspapers or any form, plays a big role in risk preparedness and mitigation. The audience is concerned about whatver else is concerned about. If there's a bad flood in some part of the world, the rest of the world starts thinking of ways to protect their territories. If portrayed appropriately, the media can be useful in spreading proper ways of mitigating risks and disasters and minimizing the effects.
