Camp Kesem Stony Brook is a 501(c)3 non-profit, student-run organization that provides a free, week-long summer camp for children (ages 6-16) affected by a parent’s cancer.
In the Spring of 2013 myself and a group of passionate students applied for a $10,000 Livestrong Community Impact Project grant and a Camp Kesem Charter. Our application was accepted and we were entered into a national online voting competition to document community support. Luckily, we received the most votes in the northeast region and were awarded the grant and our very own Camp Kesem.
I now serve as one of two Directors in our innaugural year. Our mission is to recognize and embrace this often-overlooked population of children of cancer patients on Long Island and create a peer-support network that will last a lifetime.
Our first camp will be held this summer at Camp Candlewood in New Fairfield, Connecticut from August 10th-15th. We will be opening our arms and welcoming 50 campers from the Long Island area.
