Senior biodesign is a year-long capstone course for undergraduates in the biomedical engineering department at Stony Brook. Dr. Liu co-mentors all of the teams (3 – 4 persons each) as they work towards the development of device prototypes following a rigorous process of needs finding, optimization based on customer needs and constraints, formulating business plans, understanding intellectual property, reimbursement basics, and stakeholder concerns/conflicts. Our research, along with the research of other faculty within the department, serves as a foundation for the majority of the design projects being pursued by these teams.
This course incorporates an e-portfolio system for online documentation of the various aspects of the design process. Students, faculty, and external reviewers provide feedback through web-based commenting. Students are motivated to present superior results due to the public nature of this online presentation format, which encourages “friendly competition,” reflective analytical thinking, and serves as a valuable showcase for future employers.
