In this lecture, we discussed disasters related to the Deepwater Horizon incident. We went over the design of both the Deepwater Horizon, and the Ocean Ranger. The Ocean Ranger was a similar oil rig that was taken down due to many complex pieces. The Ocean Ranger happened because of risks in the design of it. The ballast control room, that kept the rig balanced, was compromised by waves after it was flooded by waves breaking the glass. As well as the wirerope mooring system was very easily accessible by water once it reached a certain height. We also then discussed the risk of other energy technologies like renewable energy, coal, and nuclear. We went over how efficient certain technologies are, and how things like solar despite having a low ratio of energy return, is more convenient.
