In this second part of the lecture, we went into more details about oil rigs and how their drilling processes go. We saw the diferent types of drilling platforms and how the depth of the water tends to lead to more oil. The youtube video that showed how the drilling works was very will made and illustrated. It was also nice to see a clear explanation on why different liquids were being used at different depths. After that we learned about how the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded. We learned that the disaster could have been stopped if the engineers that reading the pressure, reacted in a more cautionary way. They thought that the readings that were on there were incorrect. This whole thing happened because they thought that the readings werent correct. They figured that rather than making it an issue, to let it slide. The shear blades placed to stop the flow of dirt and oil also failed due to the pipe being bent. Rather than completely stop the flow, it only partially sealed the pipe which still let liquid flow through it. The other important thing that we learned about was engineering ethics. This is one of the most important things that we need to remember. It is the core belief that all engineers should hold and it should come first. It is the values that you should only represent what you know and have made in your own field. Breaking this, only lead to negative impacts on both you and the world. Failure to withhold this can lead to the death of live, the destruction of buildings, and possibly lead to fines or jail.
