Professional Experience: 

 

Stony Brook University School of Journalism, Center for News Literacy – Stony Brook, NY (July 2012 - Present)

I was recruited by the center for two years as an Educational Media Consultant, and later accepted a full-time position as its Senior Educational Specialist. In this role, I am primarily responsible for the planning and build of its web-based Digital Resource Center, and the production and design of print, video, and other interactive teaching and promotional materials. Other duties include:

 

Project Management: 

  • Managing first year of Digital Resource Center schedule directly under the supervision of Center’s director.
  • Networking with project partners, including advisory teams, potential vendors, and outside universities for future projects. 
  • Managing research projects based around gamification of course concepts. 
  • Coordination of social media based marketing for resource center community building. 
  • Coordinating with project partners and running advisory team meetings
  • Using agile processes and online technologies for collaborative planning and tracking of project priorities. 
  • Reviewed vendor proposals with six-figure bids and played a key role in the selection of said vendors for build of multiple websites.

Media Production

  • Edit video in Final Cut Pro X, and Adobe Premiere CS6. 
  • Created motion graphics in Apple Motion, and Adobe After Effects.
  • Created graphical and interactive materials in Adobe Photoshop, Flash, and Acrobat.
  • Evaluated, selected, and purchased video production equipment with $20,000 multimedia production equipment budget.
  • Supervise and select video crews for various events. 

Web Design

  • Plan and built Digital Resource Center working beta site in Wordpress CMS. 
  • Plan and evaluate Drupal, and Joomla CMS platforms for website builds for international partner organizations, including website design.

Media Management 

  • Manage and optimize Digital Resource Center assets, including photos, video, audio, and written material

Presentation and Instruction

  • Design curriculum modules for Digital Resource Center
  • Facilitate workshops for teachers of News Literacy curriculum
  • Facilitate, plan and teach international workshops in other countries including Bhutan, Kuwait, and assisted in Hong Kong and Russia.

Freelance Audio / Video Producer and Editor

(2003 - Present)

As owner of MspikesMedia Inc, I manage and coordinate video, audio, and interactive media productions for varied clients including (selected projects): 

 

  • Rose L. Hardy Middle School for the Arts, DC Public Schools - In conjunction with the school’s library, I was contracted to produce 15, 90 second minute “Book Talks” for National Libraries week. Working with students, I shot, and edited in Final Cut Pro 7 all of the pieces and distributed them on DVD, on the web. The pieces were also aired on the DC’s public television station, the District Knowledge Network.   • AOL Inc. - Working for AOL’s hyperlocal web publication, patch.com, I worked with multiple local editors who wanted to add video news packages to their sites. I shot with both video cameras and DSLR cameras and edited various packages in Final Cut Pro 7.   • National Association of Black Journalists - Through association with the Washington Association of Black Journalists, I shot and edited multiple projects for the National Association of Black Journalists, including 3 promotional videos for NABJ’s National Conference in Philadelphia, and 2 live, multi-camera webcasts of Presidential debates to the association’s members.   • Alliant Content - As a Mobile Application Development Consultant, I offered consultation to the organization on the development of a mobile video application in iOS. I participated in the planning and development of the app, including: Evaluating different versions of mobile app, evaluating different profit models of various mobile applications, and consulting on development of new media platforms for hosting of video content.

 

Friendship News Network - Washington, DC

(June 2005 - December 2008)

As the Head of Radio and Television Division, I was primarily responsible for the coordination of the Radio and Television production programs for students in grades 6 - 12, with duties including:

 

Project Management: 

  • Management of all radio operations, including equipment purchases, recruitment of adult mentors and students and training schedules for both students and staff. 
  • Managed $150,000 budget to reinvigorate media production program for High School students both in Friendship News Network, and within the Friendship Public Charter Schools at multiple campuses. 
  • Recruitment of project partners, including industry professionals to mentor student projects, and also to advise in the cultivation of new projects. 
  • Created and Maintained a quarterly calendar of projects for both students and staff. 

Media Production 

  • Shot video on multiple mediums as videographer for multiple student video projects.
  • Finishing video editor in Final Cut Pro 7, and Adobe Premiere
  • Finishing audio editor in Adobe Audition and Steinberg’s Cubase SX for multiple projects
  • Created motion graphics for student projects in Apple Motion, and Adobe After Effects. 

Technical Management and Support 

  • Primary technical support technician for upkeep and management of all program equipment. 
  • Planned, purchased, and maintained an Mac OSX based media server. 
  • Planned, purchased, and maintained wireless intranet for student uses inside of school subnet. 

Program Training and Instruction 

  • Coordinated courses for students in grades 6-12 in Non-Linear audio and video editing, Newswriting for television and radio mediums, and Newsgathering techniques for television and radio mediums. 
  • Coordinated technical training for program instructors and staff on Adobe Creative Suite, Apple based OS’es, Media server use, and basic web search skills.

 

WAMU 88.5 American University Radio 

(July 2005 - July 2007) 

As the Project Coordinator and Producer of WAMU's Youth Voices, I primarily coordinated a bi-annual Radio production project which included the recruitment of teens from the Washington DC metropolitan area to be trained in the production of short, NPR style radio news pieces. 

 

Project Management

  • Managed program budget of $75,000 with station staff. 
  • Coordinated and taught 12-week radio production workshop
  • Recruited WAMU staff, and other local journalists to mentor workshop participants. 
  • Coordinated various staff members to schedule air-date of stories, web streaming, and website build, distribution of programs to other stations, among other duties. 

Instruction 

  • Primary instructor to project students in all areas of radio production including story conception, field recording, writing, voicing, and non-linear audio editing.

Washington DC Public Schools - Washington DC

(November 2006 - June 2012)

As a High School Mass Media Teacher, I primarily coordinated the curriculum and instruction of a total of 5 courses in Digital Mass Media, and 2 courses in Computer Hardware and Software Literacy each school year. 

 

Instruction 

  • Taught classes for grades 9-12 in Mass Media, Radio Production, Television Production, Video Editing, Computer Hardware and Software Literacy, Film Appreciation, and Writing for Electronic News Mediums. 

Project Management & School Leadership

  • Voted and appointed as Career and Technical Education Department Chair for school years 2009 - 2011.
  • Coordinated DC Public School’s Mass Media Summer School program for 4 campuses, oversaw hiring, trained and maintained a program staff of 12, and wrote 6-week program curriculum. 
  • Coordinated staff training for technical needs, including use of the internet in the classroom, and the use of Smart Boards, and other technologies in the classroom. 
  • Coordinated with George Washington University’s Department of Media and Public Affairs in developing electronic media curriculum including radio and television production practices for High School Students.

  • Coordination of media projects both inside and outside of the school environment which have included production partners such as: McNeil/Lehrer Productions, WETA/PBS, USA Today, The Washington Post, and the Smithsonian American History Museum, among others.

  • Coordinated the set up and continued maintenance of multi-room media lab, including isolation booths, video editing workstations, a television studio, and an audio studio.

As an Elementary Media Specialist, I primarily maintained the operations of the school library, and led various classes for grades K-6.
