The Flipped Classroom

What is a flipped classroom and how does it benefit my teaching and my students' learning?  To find out, we'll flip this workshop and demonstrate the engaging, student-centered learning of a flipped classroom.  It's very, very important that

before coming to the workshop you

  1. watch Penn State's Simply Speaking video on
       Flipping the Classroom
  2.  look over
7 Things You Should Know About Flipped Classrooms
Download and bring to the workshop.
  3. find additional information see Eutopia's

       Five-Minute Film Festival: Flipped Classrooms

  4. leave comments and questions at the bottom right of this page (click on Show comments and tags).

The above assignment will take you 15-20 minutes.  We will be participating in a flipped classroom activity involving brainstorming with concept maps.  Concept mapping is one of the activities you can use in your own flipped classroom.  You'll leave with more ideas and resources for flipping your classroom.  I look forward to seeing you all.

We will consider the following questions:

1.  What ways do flipped classroom designs benefit the students?

2.  What ways do flipped classroom designs benefit the instructor/teacher?

3.  What physical classrooms work best with flipped classroom design?

4.  What disciplines and course levels work best with flipped classroom design?

5.  What technologies  and activites could you use in your flipped classroom?

Your concept map will center on Flipped Classroom.  That's your main concept or node.  Use the 5 questions to construct connecting nodes and concepts.  See Concept Mapping PPT.
