Reflection Questions

Why do you feel this organization is a good example of positive and effective leadership?

Kiva is a nonprofit organization that provides financial services to those that cannot afford it, but needed most. Kiva is a good example of positive and effective leadership because they practice ethical leadership, social change model of leadership development, and inspire a shared vision. They have a mission statement that solely focuses on alleviating poverty and are doing so globally. They partnered with organizations that focus on combating poverty despite the added costs and difficulties. These organizations help increase the benefits and efficient of the micro lending process. Many would assume that Kiva would have much to gain from these transactions but they do not. Kiva does not take a cut of the capitals that are lend to Kiva borrowers or charge interest to their Field Partners, who administer the loans, in order to maximum the benefits and minimize costs to borrowers. They are in the business of advancing social causes rather than becoming part of the problem.

How it relates to you as a leader?

I could relate to Kiva as a leader such that I aim to become a socially responsible leader. Their practices of ethical leadership, social change model of leadership development, and inspire a shared vision are helping lay a foundation of my own leadership. I want to inspire a shared vision within my followers through ethical leadership that would change society for the better. By studying Kiva’s practices, I will improve my own leadership development. I can avoid mistakes that they have made and improve on and implement methods that are successful.
