Here’s What I’m Saying

By: Riya Ismail

Society: I’m calling you out.

You’re just one big game.

A continuous cycle of hate –

It’s disgusting and such a shame.

Blacks, Jews, Muslims, and Gays,

Don’t we all get hit by the same sun’s rays?

So what’s the need for these isolations,

And all these worthless discriminations?

Don’t we realize that we are all the same?

No, because we choose to play the game.

We react negatively to change,

Because we’re afraid.

We’re afraid of them but most importantly we’re afraid of ourselves.

Afraid to go outside the norm, to fight for what’s right.

We put things in the dark, and refuse to acknowledge this,

That by not understanding, we push those we love away,

Til God forbid they can’t take anymore, just like Chris.

It’s fear that makes us turn away

But isn’t it also fear that makes us face our problems,

And act upon it,

Just like Susan B. Anthony, the King, and even Reichen,

It takes one word, one line, one book, one moment,

To stand up for those who need us and for us to accept.

Don’t ask, don’t tell? Hell no, I’m proud:

To be who I am. To love those for who they are.

To have a gay man defending my country.

To attend a marriage between two souls,

Whether straight, gay, transsexual

Who cares? Why do you?

It goes back to your fear. Get over it.

Because the world is changing.

It’ll be no longer til everything is out of our grasp.

And they’ll be two sides,

The ones who love and the ones who hate,

And overtime,

The sides will become one once we get past the fear,

Past the misunderstandings, pass the judgment.

We were born this way, so accept it

Don’t lose someone great because you had to reject it.

It’s the soul that counts

And the open minds who will win at the end.

Mark my words,

Here’s what I’m saying.
