Dear Portfolio Reader,

Thank you for taking the time to read this portfolio and grade it. When looking into the portfolio you will most likely notice that as a writer I am someone that does not always write as clearly as I should and sometimes it is hard for the reader to keep up with my train of thought. Hopefully I have succeeded over the past few months on improving the clarity of my writing and you will enjoy all that I have written.

I am someone who likes creative writing, which is why out of all the assignment the one I enjoyed the most was the visual analysis because even though there were some parameters to the assignment, it was the most “free” writing from the rest. Thus, with that assignment I found no difficulties and finished it rather quickly. However, when it came to more detailed assignment such as the research paper, I had trouble putting my argument across. For a lengthy paper that it was, and for also the detailed topic that I choose, it was hard to formulate one concrete argument. So I found myself having to rewrite a few times in order for my professor to understand what I was trying to say. But it was worth it because I think out of all my papers it is the one that truly shows my writing technique.

When writing the visual analysis, my professor assigned us to write about a scientific movie and I am not a huge fan of those. However, in class we got to watch a great movie called Gattaca and I really enjoyed the way the movie bought up the controversy of genetic enginneering and if it can actually benefit society in the long run. Using that controversy as a basis for my visual research paper, I looked into the way the movie shows the effects of genetic engineering and if I agreed with them. Going back to the movie and analyzing what the writer Andrew Niccol was trying to say, I enjoyed getting to the pros and cons of that scientific innovation. For the R.U.R paper, which was the textual analysis, I did not really enjoy the novel even though the author did bring up a good theme of technology being the destruction of humans. As someone who uses technology everyday in her life and depends on it to function, it was interesting for me to see how technology could have side-effects and could take over our lives.

Before I let you go read my essays I understand that I am not the only person that you are grading so I do hope that you enjoy them because I have truly enjoyed writing them. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Serafima Norova
