Robotic Guide

The medical definition of blindness is a condition for the loss of vision due to physiological or neurological factors. It is also referred to a condition in which vision cannot be corrected with prescribed glasses or contact lenses.

There are a variety of different causes for blindness.  These include age-related degeneration, disease, genetic defects, poisoning, and eye injuries caused by physical or environmental factors. This condition has been one of the leading symptoms that were inflicted by negative physiological or physical influence to the eye. Because of this, it causes traumatic impacts to the emotional state of the patient, which produce severe inconvenience to their daily lifestyle.

Need

One of the most significant issues faced by visually impaired individuals is navigation in an unfamiliar environment.

In order to address this need, our proposed project is to program and build a robot that is capable of simple obstacle avoidance as well as self-navigation along a previously programmed path.

Aileen Orpilla - "My aim in life is to form positive relationships  with everyone I come to meet, despite individual differences.   The way that I think is that a lot of conflict arises when people fear and misunderstand each other, which is natural because inherently, most people fear or dislike what they do not understand.  In that sense, I would like to know and understand others to allow me to learn and understand myself."

Floating Graphene-Anode Microbial Fuel Cell

Our senior design project seeks to address the societal need for an inexpensive alternative energy source capable of supplying efficient and renewable power for locations lacking electrical infrastructures. A mobile source of power for people in third world countries would be beneficial for their standards of living and health.

To view the breakdown of the problem at hand and how we developed this need statement, click on the pages that follow on the left. You can also learn more about fuel cells in general and our proposed energy solution - a microbial fuel cell.  Enjoy and please comment!

PORTABLE AND AFFORDABLE VEIN VIEWING ELECTRONIC DEVICE

Dimension & Size – Based on the customer need of portability, we need to build our device as portable as possible.

Power Consumption – Since the portability is considered in customer need, we need to make the device power saving.

Compatibility Design – Our device has to be compatible with external display types such as computers and plug-n-play for maximum user friendliness.

Weight – Since our device is to be portable, lowering the weight will increase the portability and user friendliness.

Optical Design – Better optical design to meet the need of high image quality.

3D Vibration System for Cell Culture

Our design constitutes a device that sends low scale mechanical signals to cell cultures at a high frequency with adequate acceleration in three dimensions. The design criteria given by the customer of this project are listed as following

Frequency range: 10-100 Hz

Acceleration:  0.2-0.8g

Displacement: appxm. 40 μm

Space Dimension: >2

It is desired to control each element individually although some aspects like displacement are expected to change accordingly with the adjustment in frequency.

In each sub-tab we introduce different components in our design including constraints in this project, the evaluation of customers’ need against such constraints in the QFD chart, as well as the documentary of all models that we have built. There is also a page for microcontroller mini project that we might employ some of its functions in our final design.

Heated Microchannel

Our design aims to provide a method of monitoring the influence of temperature on particle interaction in continuous flow. It has been reported that red blood cells (RBC) aggregate or form rolueaux under heated conditions. The Heated Microchannel system will provide correlation data between rolueaux formation, as in increased electrostatic particle interaction, and temperature by creating a temperature field while visualizing continuous blood flow in  simulated vascular constructs. Our design will enable users to regulate temperature, hematocrit ratio, particle spacing, and other rheological and vasculature factors: Reynold's Number, vessel diameter and length, particle type, and medium properties.

Portable Smart ECG Garment and Measurement

When considering design and development of a new product, there are various parameters which need to be taken into consideration. For our proposed product (ECG Garment), there are specifics which need to be evaluated:

  • Size
    • The garment cannot be bulky and should be easily concealed under other items of clothing.
  • Weight
    • The garment should not be heavy or cause stress to the patient's body due to weight.
  • Environmental Resistance
    • The garment must be able to be resistant to weather elements, such as cold and hot temperatures, humidity, moisture (rain and snow), or oher components, such as pollution.
  • Cleanliness
    • The garment should be easily deconstructed in order for washing.
  • Power
    • The garment should not need a great amount of power to run.
  • Interference/Noise
    • The noise levels should be reduced and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) should be high for accurate data.
