Chapter 1: Making a Story Board
It is important to create a storyboard before you start to create your digital story and/or podcast. A storyboard outlines the sequence of shots or images to be used in the video.
The first step to creating a storyboard is to organize your ideas and create a script. In a script, one writes out the story that will be recorded for the video. With the images, video clips, and media you had prepared to put into the story, together we can combine the script to create the storyboard.
- a. Write a script
One of the most integral parts of Digital Story telling is the script. The script is basically a description of how you’ve decided to go about your Digital Story, essentially your narration of the story. Be sure to include this in your Digital Story section so that the viewer has a chance to look at something he might have misinterpreted or in case the audio isn’t clear enough. The script also helps you to speak confidently while recording your narration of the story. Knowing what you have to talk about and having the entire script written in front of you, makes a whole lot difference. So just be sure to either attach or paste your script in your storyboard.
- b. Gathering Images and Videos
Make sure that you collect and organize all the images and videos that you want to include in your digital story in a separate folder, so that it’s isolated from the other content. You are required to display all the images and videos you’ve used in the gallery section of your digital story.
- c. Using Creative Common music and images
Be careful of the music and imagery you use in your digital stories, most of the music out there cannot be shared unless you have the artist/label’s permission. Using such music in your work could create a copyright issue, to avoid that it is advised to use Creative Common images and music. What that means is that the owner of the content has allowed you to share it with other people without any copyright issues.
- d. Uploading your completed Storyboard onto your ePortfolio
In your courses, you will be required to upload your storyboard onto your ePortfolio. There are two options to do this. The first is to create your storyboard on the Gallery Module or upload it by first creating it on Powerpoint and then uploading that onto your ePortfolio.
Option 1: Uploading using the Gallery Module
Step 1: Open the Gallery Module on your ePortfolio.
Add a Module > Gallery > Select “Add this Module”
Step 2: Upload your media into the Gallery Module.
After selecting the Gallery Mode, click on the “Edit Tab”> Add Media . After selecting “Add Media”, a new window will open called “My Assets”. On that new window, you may now select “Browse Media” as shown below. Now you can pick the media you would like to add to your storyboard.
Step 3: Adding your script to your images.
Once you have uploaded all your images, you can now add your script. Select Edit Tab > “Edit Caption” > Write your script for each image then hit “Save Caption”
Option 2: Uploading using Powerpoint
Step 1: Upload an image to your Powerpoint.
Once you have opened Powerpoint, the first step is to upload your first media image to it. To do that select the “Insert” Tab > Picture. After selecting “Picture”, a new window will open to allow you to browse for the media to upload. Do this for each media and place each of them on a new slide.
Step 2: Adding your script to your images.
Once you have uploaded all your images to your powerpoint storyboard, we can now add your script to it. In order to do this, select the “Insert” Tab > Text Box. Place the text box below your image, and write your script, as shown below.

Chapter 2: Choosing an Application
a. Using Windows Live Movie Maker on PC
Step 1: Opening Windows Movie Maker
After we have our photos/ videos ready, we can now open Windows Live Movie Maker by clicking on Start – All Programs – Windows Live – Windows Live Movie Maker.
Step 2: Uploading media to use for Digital Story
Once Windows Live Movie Maker is opened on the computer we can click on “Add videos and photos” (shown below). This will give a small window asking us to navigate to the folder that has our photos/videos. If you have saved your photos on the desktop you can click on the desktop option on the left of the window and navigate to the folder. You can now select a photo/video and click open to browse the item.
Step 3: Organizing your media in Windows Live Movie Maker
The photos/ videos will be aligned in a timeline. If there is any item you want to delete from the timeline you can click on the item and press delete on the key board or right click on the item and click remove. If you want to change the position of any item you can click and drag the item and change its position.

Chapter 3: Adding Audio to the Digital Story
a. Using Audacity (Free Downloadable Software)
Using Audacity can look very complicated at first, but it is easy to use.
How to Record Audio on Audacity
To record audio on Audacity, press the “Record” Button. The Record Button is a Red Circle located immediately on the right of the fast forward (skip to end) button. Once it is pressed, Audacity will begin recording, so you can begin telling your story. When you are done recording your story, press the “Stop” Button to stop recording. The stop button is a square located immediately to the right of the “Play” button, a sideways green triangle, as shown below:
Saving your Audio
To use your audio on Windows Movie Maker or iMovie, please save your Audio as an .mp3 file. To do this, select File > Export ... > Save As Type: .mp3
Note: If you hit File > Save Project, your recording will be saved as an .aup file which can only be opened by Audacity. This is meant to save your file to be further edited on Audacity.
b. Adding Audio to the Digital Story on Windows Movie Maker
Step 4: Recording your own sound/voice to add to your Digital Story
If you want to add your own sound/voice you can record it using any recording software. Audacity is free software found online that can record sound. But again, you need to save the audio file as mp3. See above for further instructions.
Note: The older version on Windows movie maker has the sound recording function built-in.
Step 5: How to add music/ sound
Adding music/ sound in another important step of creating movie. Make sure the audio file is in mp3 format. To add your sound, click on the “Add music” option (highlighted in yellow below) on the home tab and browse the audio file.
Step 6: Change the length of time images play to go along with audio
After you add music/sound to your movie you can change the duration of each item on the movie by double clicking on them and changing the time under “Music Tools”.
Step 7: Adding two audio files to your Digital Story on Windows
If you want to add both music and your voice to your movie then it will be a two-step process. First you need to finish creating your movie with only your recorded sound and save it as movie file and then open a new Windows Live movie maker. After that you need to browse the movie file on the Windows live movie maker and add music.
Chapter 4: Transition
a. Adding Transitions on Windows Movie Maker
Step 8: Adding Transition to your Digital Story
The second tab on Windows Live Movie Maker is Animations that gives options to change transitions and pan & zoom. Transitions are the effect applied between two items on the movie and pan & zoom is the effect applied on one item of the movie.
Step 9: Adding Visual Effects to your Digital Story
Third tab “visual effect” gives movie like effect to the items. After you added an effect, if you want to change you can just click on a different effect. If you want to keep on effect there is a default option which is the first option that removes the effect applied to the item.

Chapter 5: Review and Publish your Digital Story
Step 10: Adding Credits to your Story on Windows Live Movie Maker
The options of adding title, caption and credits is also under the home tab. Title is added right before the selected item (photo/video) and caption is added on the selected item. So you need to specify the position of title and caption before you click on the option. Credits are always added at the end of the movie.
Step 11: Saving your Digital Story on Windows Live Movie Maker
After you are done, you can save the movie file by clicking on the Save movie option under the home tab. You can also save the project file by clicking on the tab next to home tab.
