 Technology and Society

EST 201 - Edwin Tjoe, Faculty

Anthony Lopez - I believe technology is a wonderful thing and has helped our world in several ways. Technology has been around since the beginning of time and its effect on the world is very important. It is amazing to see how new technologies have come about in history and see where we are with technology today. For instance, the invention of the abacus way back in the sixteenth century BC was an instrument for recording number values and performing basic arithmetic. Today, we have computers than can process billions of instructions in a second. Technology has advanced so much over the years and in today’s world, the pace at which it is increasing is tremendous.

LELawerence - I'm a Stony Brook Student in the major of Computer Science. I Believe hard work can never beat talent I hold my pride and values very high and never break my personal code. My educational goal is to obtain a BS in Computer Science. I do not allow emotion to affect rational thinking.

Katiuska Daniela Pulgar Prieto -  I am an international student that came to Stony Brook University in search of a better research opportunity in Biochemistry, my undergraduate major.

Jim Yee -  I am a 19 (soon to be 20) year old sophomore at Stony Brook University. I am majoring in Clinical Laboratory Sciences and I am on the pre-med track. My career path for most of my life appeared to be a solid one that pointed towards a medical field, but as I explore myself further in college, I find myself fascinated by all the choices that I am given.

Anna Zhu - To some people, psychology is considered as the study of “common sense”, but I think that it would help me understand the human mind and better understand my patients in my dream in becoming a nurse.

Preet Korani - Technology is a great power. And with great power, comes great responsibility.  Hello, my name is Preet Korani. I am a Biology Major on the Pre-med track. I want to become a Pediatric Cardiologist. My hobbies include, playing basketball, playing football, working out, stressing about Organic Chemistry, watching tv, and long walks on the beach. I took this class because I wanted to understand the impact technology can have on our lives and how fast technology is progressing.

Addie Browning  - I am currently a sophomore and a History major.  I have also recently declared the Leadership Development minor so I will be starting classes for that in the upcoming fall semester.  I am not extremely tech savvy but out of the people in my family, I am the best with technology, meaning everyone comes to me for help with their devices.  I like to read and hang out with friends.  I didn’t grow up with video games, but I’m starting to learn a few that my friends have been teaching me how to play.  I love to run; you’ll often see me running around Circle Road at night.  I was supposed to go to Stony Brook Southampton but because it was shut down, I came here instead.  I am a vegetarian and a tree hugger.  I have changed my major two times since I’ve been here.  I started out as Environmental Humanities and then switched to English my first semester of my sophomore year, and then halfway through that semester, I switched to History.  That is proof that you don’t always stick to the major you start out with and you could change it several times.

Anne Bae - Technology is a pivotal part of society that has been around for as long as we can remember. It is a force so strong that it dictates the way of life. Generally, countries living in a more technologically advanced society fare better than those lacking modernity. While I believe that technology holds a great importance, I also see technology as something that should be handled carefully; it can lead us toward a brighter future, or it may corrupt our way of life.

Marlena Bugnacka - To find happiness, fulfillment, and value in living, I will seek out and experience all of the joys that life has to offer. My core values are not limitations restraining me on this journey for adventure. Rather, they provide a framework for identifying, pursuing, and achieving those joys that last the longest and are the most satisfying. The greatest joy of all is being worthy of the respect and admiration of family, friends, and colleagues.
