Engineer Profile

Born August 21, 1973 in the Soviet Union, Sergey Brin would grow up to co-found Google, Inc. alongside Larry Page and become one of the most influential people in the modern world. After emigrating to the United States during early childhood, Brin eventually found his way into the computer science Ph.D program at Stanford. There he met Page and together they adapted a data mining system Brin had been working on into a search engine. The engine eventually became so popular at Stanford that Page and Brin decided to suspend their Ph.D studies and start-up a business around it out of a rented out garage. Thus, Google came to be.

Since Google's inception, Brin has continued to be a prominent member of engineering and computer science society. He has published over a dozen papers on data mining and the infrastructure of the world wide web, as well as managing his duties as a developer for and President of Technology of Google, Inc. Forbes Magazine ranked both Brin and Larry as the fifth most powerful people in the world in their November 2009 edition, IE Business school gave them honorary MBA's in 2003, in 2004 they received the Marconi Foundation Prize (widely considered the most prestigious award in engineering), and Brin is an inductee of the National Academy for Engineering.

As far as personal and moral views go, Brin embodies the ideal of righteousness in engineering. He was a leading advocate in the decision to remove www.google.cn because of China's stringent information control laws. At first he was okay with the engine being available in China because a censored search engine is still better than no search engine, but after numerous events culminating in the attack on Google's servers he realized that by bending to China's regulations it made other countries more open to the idea of posting their own censorship laws.
