 Summer 2017 Texts

Required texts:

Best American Essays of the Century.  Ed. Joyce Carol Oates, co-edit. Robert Atwan. Mariner Books, 2001. Print.  (Available at the campus bookstore or Amazon.com, also see Open Library)

Reference:

Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL).

Materials and Media

We will be using Digication (ePortfolios) and Google Docs (for written work).  Both require free accounts.  You may either compose your essays in GD or upload/convert them from Word for peer review. Because we use Google Doc commenting for peer review and instructor review, the Google Docs need to be set so that permission is allowed for commenting at all times. The ePortfolio must be well-designed and will be graded on this aspect, separately from the essays. The ePortfolio is considered a multimodal composition in its own right, so it should convey your ethos (personality, reputation, presence, attentiveness to audience's needs) as a writer/designer.

Other equipment:

A digital camera is recommended for the optional digital storytelling project.  A cell phone camera is fine. A video camera will also be useful—again, many cell phones have this feature.  These are not required for the completion of the final project, which can be done with downloaded materials from Creative Commons and/or scanned photographs, as well.

You will probably want to use movie-editing software, such as iMovie or OpenShot, for the digital story.
